I have a fascination with these ancient non flowering spore bearing plants.
The feather like fractal qualities of their fronds & the way they react to light in a different way to other plants draws me.
Light & Shade.
Heaven & Earth.
Above & below.
Wild nature & contrived.
A study of a mud sculpture at Heligan Gardens & an image from Wistman's Wood Dartmoor.

Dartmoor is rich in pre-Christian history & Wistman's wood full of myth, mystery, magic & legend.
Wistman's wood. legendary dartmoor.
The weather has sculpted these old oak trees into wonderful natural statues overgrown with moss, lichens & bilberry.
I was drawn to the similarities & differences between these two images & thought I'd put them together.
Just a sample of the birdlife found on my local moor.
There are other species present, some rare some not so.
Whitethroats & other little warblers & the very rare nightjar has been seen flying in the area.
So please next time you take a walk on the barren heath please remember it's not as barren as it may seem. Tavascarowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06934043943486329023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780748695109290807.post-41117866870187604482016-05-06T10:11:00.000-07:002016-05-06T11:41:26.268-07:00Wheatear.

A walk last night on the heath around my roots looking for Yellowhammers & Stonechats was unsuccessful.
It's worrying that these two species that where common a few years ago appear to be absent.
It's also personally a disappointment.
There is little more beautiful than a cock Yellowhammer in full sun singing his "A little bit of bread & no cheese please." & the sound of the stonechat, just like its name, the sound of two flints being hit together is a sound I've grown up with & I miss it.
I was looking forward to capturing some good images to share.
Hopefully this is a blip & they will return another year.
A lot of the heathland birds like stonechats, yellowhammers, skylarks & meadowpipits nest on or near the ground.
This makes them very vulnerable to predation & disturbance so if you are walking in these areas please watch where you put your feet & those of your hounds too.
It's an even bigger dissapointment to not see the cuckoo at Carn Grey.
I think this is the first year I've not heard one or seen them sitting on the wires above the heath.

One nice interaction was the discovery of a pair of Wheatears.
Not a rare bird, but not common locally.
The name has nothing to do with Wheat. They are very much a moorland bird & not agricultural
It's actually translates from old English as white ass. Under its tail it has a very white rump.
The male showed first & it is probably my imagination but I think he was deliberately leading me away from his mate.
He kept flitting away a few feet then looking back at me to check where I was.
Bold bright male plumage has more use than just impressing the girls.
It also acts as a lure to draw predators from the more muted sitting hen.
It wasn't until I was walking back that I spotted the hen.
Lets hope they are successful & there will be more in the future.

The Male first then the female.
I'm a little bit of an ignoramus when it comes to pagan rites & ritual.
But when it comes to belief systems ones closer to nature are certainly closer to my own than the monotheistic ones that seem to cause the majority of the conflicts in the world.
So if you read this from a place of pagan knowledge please excuse my ignorance & feel free to correct me.
Something that struck me is the world is constantly in flux & change, be it seasonal, geological, natural or political.
So a belief system that has more understanding of such change & embraces it is better than ones that try to control everything & everyone.
That is impossible. It's doomed to fail.
The fact pre Christian pagan ritual still exists despite the efforts of many. & the way Christianity has fixed its own ceremonies close to the timings of pagan ones. Also that most of those pagan ritual has been handed down orally, not cast in stone or on scrolls adds to its strength in my humble opinion.

I was invited by a facebook friend to share the Beltane celebrations at Avebury in Wiltshire.
The beginning of summer.
The nights before where cold & frosty & it's certainly more like summer now a few days later.
Avebury is a quirky place. The largest neolithic stone circle in Europe with a huge ditch dug around it with a beautiful old village & a busy road running through the middle .
The mix of believers, posh wealthy locals, & coachloads of tourists from all over the world made interesting viewing. I wish I could overcome my own self conciousness that stops me from pointing my camera at others.

Wiltshire is a big open county with rolling hills & big skies. Very different to my homeland & I was photographing the weather as much as I was the landscape.
Something that struck me was when away from traffic noise was the sound of skylarks.
I didn't expect to hear them in a agricultural landscape that is predominately industrial & chemical cereal lands.
It came as a pleasant surprise.
Onto the photos.
It's rare for storms to blow in from the South but on the 10th April big seas & high tides meant my local port of Charlestown was in line for some rough seas.
2016 Happy new year

Although we are three weeks in this is my first post of the year so my first opportunity to make such a greeting here on my blog.
It's the 20th of January & on this day in 1925 my father was born.
Sadly he left us two years ago, but I think it's right to post some pictures from his beloved homeland.
Views I'm sure he enjoyed as much as I do, although he never owned a camera or wanted to record moments in the way his son does.
First a photo of the man, although at the time, wasn't much more than youth.
My favourite photo of all time, taken when he was in his late teens, near the end or soon after the end of WW2.
Standing in his Sunday best with his horse Star, leading the carnival queen & her attendants in the local carnival.
I'm wondering how many hours my Father & Grandmother took to get Star looking so smart.
Polishing leather & brass, plaiting mane & tail. I hope the young ladies on the cart where suitably impressed.
To some of the views I know he loved.
All taken from Carn Grey where my Father was born & lived & farmed for the first fifty or so years.

In my last post I got a bit personal & emotional.
This one goes farther.
This Granite tor is my roots.
I spent the first thirteen years of my life living less than half a kilometre from it, & still live about a kilometre from it.
The heath around it & the disused granite quarry below it where my playground & my nature classroom.
I can remember picking bilberries with my mother when I was five.
Purple stained lips & fingers.
I can remember huddling under the overhang with my first love when the heavens opened. Feeling manly & protective as a curtain of water cascaded around us, although I was still very much a boy.
I can remember the start, then the fascination, when I saw my first adder basking on the rock.
So many memories for one lump of rock & those only mine.
I wonder how many others it holds.

Looking East from Carn Grey you can see three more Cornish Tors.
In the foreground you can see Helman Tor. Rear left Rough tor, not pronounced rough but row as in argument. & rear right Brown Willy from Cornish Bronn Wennili, meaning "hill of swallows".
One last Look at Cape Cornwall. I know Cornwall is a very popular tourist destination but honestly it's at its best when the beaches are deserted & the weather at its wildest. Those of you that come here in July & August & just laze on the beaches would be better getting a cheap package to Spain.

On the walk back to St Just I came upon Carn Gluze or Ballowall barrow in English.
I'd walked past it the day before from another angle & just assumed it was another mineshaft. They build hegdes around the old shafts to stop their livestock falling in.
It was unusual to see a barrow exposed.
All I've seen before have been earthed over for protection. To see one exposed to the elements was a revelation.

A weekend I will always cherish.
A fitting end to 2015.
Since my Dads death a couple of years ago I've been debating what to do with my life & emigration has been high on my list.
I have felt so despondent about Britain & my neighbours. Considering seeing more of the world & its nature before its gone is tempting me.
Seeing Choughs, my national bird, above Cape Cornwall has grounded me.
It hasn't made me realise Cornwall is my home & I shouldn't leave but more it's told me wherever I am in the world Cornwall will always be my home.
There's a saying wherever you find a hole in the world you will find a Cornishman at the bottom.
It might be my time to climb out of the hole I'm in & go dig a hole somewhere else.
I can't tell you how blown away I was with seeing those seven birds. For most of my life they have been all but extinct here in their native land. Prior to recent success the last pair to raise young was in 1947. By fate & others misfortune the foot & mouth outbreak of 2001 shut the cliff paths & three birds from Ireland dropped in. Two of which decided to stay & bred the following year, & have done every year since. Long lived monogamous creatures Choughs.

Fourteen years later there are now about eighty resident birds but still only four breeding pairs. The RSPB monitor & guard every site & hopefully generations to come will be able to enjoy their jinking on the updraughts. RSPB Cornish Chough Project.

So anyway by now it was late morning & my chances of getting near to St Ives by evening narrow so Woody & Chip wimped & said lets go back to St Just for an all day breakfast. I was still to blown away seeing nearly a tenth of Cornwalls Chough population in one go & was to weak to argue.

Skytip.
I don't know if that word is universally used to describe these conical mine waste tips.
I read recently there's a place in france where similar hills are revered & protected.
Many of them adorned the skyline around St Austell, to the extent that the area was called the Cornish Alps. but sadly over many years they have declined.
This skytip is also threatened. A new road has been put very close & land is wanted for development.
Unfortunately profit is more important than history to some.
This tip can be seen from all around the St Austell bay area & many mariners used it as a navigation point before satnav.
I have made it an ongoing project to record the scene in all its moods for as long as I can.
Trying to get me & the dogs fit for longer journeys.
Tad short of ten miles.
I was hoping for some big moody seas but the best waves where on the North coast as per usual.
A belated armistice post. & almost a week after 13/11/2015. A day of tragedy for the world not just our European neighbours. The reaction from that has been predictable & will only escalate the troubles.
So lets think about the real victims of war.
The innocent civilians who have lost their homes livelihoods & in many tens of thousands of cases their lives.
Lets spread peace & hope, just like tiny poppy seeds simple thoughts & gestures can grow into something beautiful.
Beautiful light.
A view I have photographed many times & will hopefully photograph many more times.
Multiple shafts of light spotlight the landscape & bring life to a cloudy day.Tavascarowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06934043943486329023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780748695109290807.post-56724116620246924942015-03-23T01:58:00.002-07:002015-03-23T01:58:44.181-07:00Spring is sprunging. Industrial Archaeology gone wild & eclipses over Eden.

Taken two days before the Spring equinox a stand of naturalised primroses shine from the shade.

Much of my borrowed landscape is former industrial land. The whole area around me was either farmed or mined for tin & kaolin. Now those industries have declined the landscape has rewilded where it's been allowed.
This steel pipe is about one hundred years old & colonised by mosses & ferns as it slowly declines.

This old granite built blacksmith shop is now hidden in the woods & looks more like a lost inca
temple than a former hive of industry.

And to the eclipse.
Not having the correct lenses or filters to photograph the eclipse properly I decided to include it in the landscape.
Taken across & above the Eden domes on a cold & misty morning added atmosphere.
In truth if no one had told me the eclipse was happening I would only have noticed the drop in temperature & the dusk like light but 'twas nice anyway.

Roche Rock 06/03/2015.
I have photographed here many times in the past with varying results.
I don't usually big up my images, taste is fickle & one mans meat etc.
But I honestly think this is the best photo I've taken.
This Panasonic micro 4/3 & 14mm lens combo is excellent, especially for mono.
I'm chuffed.

Looking east from Roche rock are two wind turbines. Monolithic structures framed by natural granite extrusions that are real monoliths.
Turbines get a lot of bad press & NIMBY protesters. Personally I like the look & sounds of turbines. I'd far rather see them than pylons & certainly more photogenic than a coal or nuclear fired power station.
As always right click, view image & enlarge.

Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) are shy & very well camouflaged in the wild, It's rare to spot them on the ground & tend to only get noticed when they explode from cover like a squadron of harrier jets.
One could say they are, to use birding terminology a typical LBJ (little brown job).
Kept tame & well lit by flash even the wild form shows their true beauty & are far from plain.
The above male who was very camera curious shows just how attractive these birds really are.

& his mate (above) shares the same multi hued & patterned plumage but lacks his showy breast & has a speckled breast instead.

Like a lot of once wild birds that have been kept domestically for centuries, man has bred for different plumage colourations & mutations.
The Golden Italian (below) is probably the second most common after the wild & shares the same marking but in a much lighter sandy tone.

Another popular form is the English white. As its name suggests just plain white although almost all birds have a spot or two of brown usually on or around their heads. Not as easy to tell the sexes apart but the males have more facial feathering which they use when showing off to the girls. Many breeders prefer white birds for the meat trade as with other poultry & game, the odd feather left on a white bird after plucking doesn't show as much as with darker plumaged birds.

The Spanish or Range quail is a melanistic form. Much darker & with completely different markings to the wild & Italian.

Finally the Pied or Tuxedo. Another melanistic type but with white breast & facial markings.
A very striking bird in my humble opinion.

These are by no means all of the plumage variations out there. I have owned cinnamon, & there are also blue mutations. As they are all the same species cross breeding & the resultant variety can be very interesting. With certain genes being dominant & others recessive you are never sure what might turn out.
Sometimes you have to stare into the light.
Willow in Carn Grey quarry & lens flare.
The tree is stretching towards the light & the lighting gives it a facial quality.
Often when I'm shooting mirrors & mandalas the unique way a tree is lit on a particular moment means no two images are the same & many times I've tried & failed to duplicate or improve but the results always differ to the point of frustration.
So now I just treat each image individually & try to find something special that I can highlight or enhance.
Gold Laced Wyandotte Stag (young male).
When I was a kid & coming from a farming family it was rare we didn't go to the annual County agricultural show. One of the delights for me was always the poultry tent. The sheer variety in shape size & colour was as fascinating as a trip to an old fashioned sweet shop & the cacophony of poultry noise an atmosphere of its own. My favourite breed was always the Gold Laced Wyandottes. Eventually through buying & incubating hatching eggs I've owned a few of these birds, & this dandy was probably one of the best. The Gold Laced was never a commercial breed for eggs or meat, purely bred for looks & show although pre battery hen days the white wyandotte was an important part of the British egg laying flock. Finding a good laying strain now would be as easy as finding hens teeth or rocking horse shit.Tavascarowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06934043943486329023noreply@blogger.com0
